# Docs MCP server

> Connect the Stability AI docs MCP server to Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code, Codex, or Claude so your coding agent can read the API reference while it writes code.

export const SETUP_PROMPT = 'Add the Stability AI docs MCP server to this environment. It is a public ' + 'Streamable HTTP server at https://docs.stability.ai/mcp and needs no ' + 'authentication. Name it stability-docs. After adding it, search the docs ' + 'for "Stable Audio 3" to confirm the connection works.';

The [MCP](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) server is hosted, public, and needs no API key:

```text theme={null}
https://docs.stability.ai/mcp
```

<Note>
  This server reads documentation only. It does not call the Stability AI API, so it never spends credits. Your agent still needs your [API key](https://platform.stability.ai/dashboard/api-keys) in the code it writes, not in the chat.
</Note>

Don't see your tool? Paste this into any coding agent and it does the setup for you:

```text theme={null}
Add the Stability AI docs MCP server to this environment. It is a public
Streamable HTTP server at https://docs.stability.ai/mcp and needs no
authentication. Name it stability-docs. After adding it, search the docs
for "Stable Audio 3" to confirm the connection works.
```

## Manual setup

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="Claude Code">
    Run this in your terminal:

    ```bash theme={null}
    claude mcp add --transport http stability-docs https://docs.stability.ai/mcp
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Cursor">
    Open the command palette, search for **Open MCP settings**, and add this to `mcp.json`:

    ```json theme={null}
    {
      "mcpServers": {
        "stability-docs": {
          "url": "https://docs.stability.ai/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="VS Code">
    Create `.vscode/mcp.json` in your project:

    ```json theme={null}
    {
      "servers": {
        "stability-docs": {
          "type": "http",
          "url": "https://docs.stability.ai/mcp"
        }
      }
    }
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Codex">
    Run this in your terminal:

    ```bash theme={null}
    codex mcp add stability-docs --url https://docs.stability.ai/mcp
    ```
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Claude">
    1. Open **Settings** and go to **Connectors**.
    2. Click **Add custom connector**.
    3. Enter `Stability AI docs` as the name and `https://docs.stability.ai/mcp` as the URL. Leave the OAuth fields blank.
    4. Click **Add**.

    In a chat, click the **+** button and choose the server to use it.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="Other clients">
    Any client that supports Streamable HTTP can use the URL directly. For clients that only speak stdio, bridge it with `mcp-remote`:

    ```bash theme={null}
    npx -y mcp-remote https://docs.stability.ai/mcp
    ```
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

## Check the connection

Ask your agent:

```text theme={null}
Using the Stability AI docs, what output formats does Stable Audio 3 text-to-audio support, and what is the default duration?
```

You should see it call a search or read tool on the docs server and answer from the [Text-to-Audio](/api-reference/stable-audio/text-to-audio) reference. If it answers from memory without calling a tool, the server is not registered. See [troubleshooting](#troubleshooting).

## What the server can do

| Tool | What it does |
| - | - |
| Search | Full text search across every page. Returns snippets with titles and links. |
| Browse and read | Navigates the site as a filesystem and reads whole pages as Markdown, one or several at a time. |
| Feedback | Reports a page that is wrong, outdated, or unclear. The report goes to the docs team. |

## Example prompts

Once connected, the agent looks things up on its own. Prompts that work well:

* "Write a Python function that calls Stable Audio 3 text-to-audio with a prompt and duration, handles the 202 response, and polls the audio results endpoint until the file is ready."
* "Build a TypeScript client for the Stable Audio 3 endpoints with proper typing for the multipart request body."
* "Show me how to pass an input file to the audio-to-audio endpoint, what formats it accepts, and what the strength parameter does."
* "How do mask\_start and mask\_end work for Stable Audio 3 inpainting?"
* "How many credits does a Stable Audio 3 generation cost, and does duration change the price?"

## Other ways agents can read the docs

If a tool does not support MCP, you can still hand it the docs directly:

* [`https://docs.stability.ai/llms.txt`](https://docs.stability.ai/llms.txt) lists every page with a one line summary.
* Append `.md` to any page URL to get its Markdown, for example [`/api-reference/index.md`](https://docs.stability.ai/api-reference/index.md).
* The [OpenAPI spec](https://docs.stability.ai/openapi.json) describes every endpoint for code generation and typed clients.

## Troubleshooting

<AccordionGroup>
  <Accordion title="The tools are not showing up in my client">
    Restart the client after adding the server. In Claude Code, run `claude mcp list` to check it registered. In Cursor, open **MCP settings** and confirm the server shows as connected.
  </Accordion>

  <Accordion title="The agent gave me outdated information">
    Ask it to search the docs again and quote the page it used. If the page itself is wrong, ask the agent to use the feedback tool, or [open a support ticket](https://kb.stability.ai/knowledge-base/kb-tickets/new).
